Nothing...they are both doing the same thing. Digital zoom in the camera and editing and cropping on your computer. Doing this on the computer gives you more control and better quality.

If you use a good editing software such as photoshop, or even Iphoto, it's exactly the same thing. I think you should get a proper lens, and use optical zoom so you don't loose any quality.

Logic will tell you that you will have much more control of the crop using the digital darkroom on your computer.

Get the best shot you can using the highest resolution available on your camera and then do your magic using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Cropping using your 17 inch monitor will be much more precise than attempting to do it using the tiny LCD screen on your camera.

Well the main thing is you get instant feedback of your photo right away. You don't have to wait to get back to your computer for editing. As for quality differences that is hard to say. If you are using an advanced photo editing software like Photoshop it's enlargement will be just as good or more so than on your camera's digital zoom.

No, there is no reason to use digital zoom over cropping & enlarging on the computer. The only difference might be the algorithm used for smoothing and interpolating, but any decent image editing software will have a high quality algorithm available.

zoom is like looking through binoculars, it magnifies the subject. cropping does nothing to help the pictures resolution

If you use enlarge on the computer, it will start getting grainy. Use zoom on the camera as much as possible.
