Digital Painting Tutorial : Hanagumori - Part1

Tutorial here : http://dianae.deviantart.com/art/Digital-Painting-Tutorial-74468761

Hello people!

This is the 1st part of the video screen capture I’ve done while painting “Hanagumori” : http://dianae.deviantart.com/art/Hanagumori-70756649

There are 8 parts total.

Part 2 : http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=wQCOp51NTF8
Part 3 http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=oftWFKxq-Ac
Part 4 http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=_ea83VeaAAQ
Part 5 http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=MjORVwWflOg
Part 6 http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=-fLsL0Mi95Q
Part 7 http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=VIz6_hfwMBA
Part 8 http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=N7fBWM2-14E

This painting has been done in order to write a digital painting tutorial explaining the techniques I’m using to paint. This is just meant to be informative.

Tools used : Photoshop CS3 (but older versions can be used too, of course) and a wacom intuos 3A4 graphics tablet.

Total painting time : approximately 12 hours, but I’ve changed the speed of the video (1500%).

I’ve not put music so you can listen to your favourite music while watching it. I might write and record a specific soundtrack later if you feel that it really needs music, but this is just an informative video, not something artsy at all.

I hope that it can be useful, if you have any question, you can leave them in the comments, I’ll try to reply the best I can.

Sorry for my bad english, I’m french, I hope you’ll understand though.

    unless I’m very …
unless I’m very much mistaken diane surely did (and also do, i guess) traditional paintings on canvas. i also heard that she have to paint like this, with one layer i mean, because her computer crashes, when she tries to add new layers. fantastic pictures even with technic barriers :)

    It’s a beautiful …
It’s a beautiful painting, and an interesting way of doing it. Do you ever do real media paintings? Like, on canvases and stuff? See, I started with that, digital painting wasn’t widespread when I was learning art. I didn’t get my first tablet until I was 21 or so, and that was in 2001. So I paint like TOTALLY different, like a real media painter. It’s hard to get my head around the different styles, man! Lovely painting!

    I notice that you …
I notice that you flip the picture several times. Does that help getting both sides of the face symmetrical?

    Lets you push …
Lets you push pixels a little bit so you can adjust proportions as such.

Damn - it must have …
    - it must have taken you forever to do this. Where do you find the willpower to sit there and get this done? I’ve started tons of things that I never finish because I’m always moving on to something else. Sure, the artwork is amazing, the the time it took to make this is… even more so! DX

    Not sure if …
Not sure if anyone’s answered this question yet, but she does it to make sure both sides are symmetrical and proportional.
Generally, if you flip an image and it looks good, then you’re on the right track. :D

    You mean when she …
You mean when she zoomed in on the face and tweaked everything?
The would be the liquefy tool. Its under filters, up at the top.
If you mean the lines, then she probably just held shift while using a normal brush, to get straight lines.
